AI or automation? A quick way to tell them apart
Search for AI in Tally Prime and you will find almost every feature from the last three releases described as AI. Some are; many are very good rule-based automation. The difference matters when you decide what still needs a person, and what Tally automation you should add on top.
A simple test: rules follow instructions you could write down ("match if amount, date, and cheque number agree"). AI interprets something that has no fixed format ("this number in the corner of a supplier's bill is the GSTIN"). Rules are predictable and break on anything unusual. AI handles variety but needs review.
The AI features TallyPrime ships today
This is the picture as of TallyPrime Release 7.2, released on 12 October 2026. Release 7.2 itself added a "Get Started with TallyIra" option under F1 (Help), alongside GSTR-9 export and 30-day e-invoice sessions.
| Feature | What it does | AI or rules | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Docs by Ira | Reads PDF or image invoices, orders, and credit/debit notes and creates draft vouchers; maps parties and items, flags duplicates | AI | Release 7.0+, active TSS; 100 free pages for 2 months, then paid |
| TallyIra mobile app | Scan bills on the phone and send them to Docs by Ira, up to 10 files per batch | AI | Docs by Ira set up on the company |
| TallyPrime MCP tools | Lets an AI assistant such as Claude Desktop read company, masters, accounting, inventory, outstanding, and transaction data | AI access | Technical setup on the machine running TallyPrime |
| Bank statement import and auto reconciliation | Imports Excel, CSV, or MT940 statements and matches lines on amount, date, and instrument number | Rules | Release 6.0+ (one-click flow from 7.0) |
| Connected banking | Fetches statements and reconciles with supported banks (Axis, SBI, Kotak, ICICI) | Rules | Active TSS and a supported bank |
| HSN/SAC validation and IMS reconciliation | Checks codes online and tracks input tax credit against the Invoice Management System | Rules | Release 7.1+ |
Docs by Ira is the one to know. According to the Docs by Ira FAQ, it handles eight voucher types (purchase, sales, purchase order, sales order, delivery note, receipt note, credit note, and debit note) from PDF and image files with one transaction per file. It does not support handwritten documents, languages other than English, Word or Excel files, or bank statements.
TallyPrime MCP tools are newer and less talked about. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant call tools in other software. Tally's MCP tools page lists tools for company, masters, accounting, inventory, outstanding, and transactions, with a setup guide for Claude Desktop. It is powerful for a technically minded user and not yet a ready-made experience for a business owner.
What TallyPrime's AI does not do yet
- Bank statements in PDF, scan, or photo form. Native import takes Excel, CSV, and MT940 only, and Docs by Ira does not read bank statements.
- Explain unmatched bank lines. Auto reconciliation tells you a line did not match, not why or what to post. Our guide to bank reconciliation in Tally Prime shows how much time that last 1 to 3 percent takes.
- Handwritten or regional-language bills. Common with small suppliers and transporters, and outside Docs by Ira's scope.
- Plain-words questions for the owner. "Who owes us more than ₹1 lakh for over 60 days?" still means opening a report, or setting up MCP with an outside assistant.
Five kinds of AI add-ons for Tally
- Bill and document readers that post purchase and sales vouchers in bulk. The step-by-step manual method they replace is in our guide to purchase entry in Tally Prime with GST.
- Bank statement readers that accept PDFs and scans and help with the unmatched lines.
- Chat with Tally apps that answer questions on outstanding, cash, sales, and GST in plain words, often on mobile.
- AI dashboards and insights that watch receivables, margins, and GST risk and point out what changed.
- General AI assistants through MCP, for teams comfortable configuring them.
Some tools do one of these well; a few combine several. Our comparison of the best Tally automation software in India lines up the main options by job, inputs, and price.
Where Tally automation with AI goes beyond TallyPrime's built-in features
Tally automation with AI means software that reads documents and data the way an accountant would, prepares the entry, and waits for approval before anything reaches the books. TallyPrime's own AI does this for invoices. The difference with an add-on is scope.
KolossusAI takes a month's bills in one upload, reads bank statements as PDF, Excel, CSV, Word, scans, or phone photos, explains each unmatched bank line with a suggested entry, posts everyday entries in one click after approval, and lets the owner ask Tally a question from the Android or iOS app. AI Insights flags receivables, churn, and GST risks without anyone building a report. It works alongside TallyPrime's native features rather than replacing them.
How to choose
- Check your release and TSS. Docs by Ira needs Release 7.0+ with active TSS. If you are already there, try it on invoices first.
- Count the hours, by job. Bills, bank, everyday entries, or reports. Automate the biggest one first.
- Look at your real documents. If half your bills arrive as WhatsApp photos or your bank sends PDFs, test exactly those.
- Insist on approval before posting and a log of every voucher written.
- Compare full cost. Page quotas, per-bill charges, GST, and how many users and devices are included.
Conclusion
AI in Tally Prime has become real in 2026. Docs by Ira handles invoice entry inside Tally, and MCP opens the door to outside assistants. Bank statements that arrive as PDFs or photos, unmatched lines, and plain-words answers are still left to people or add-ons.
If those gaps are where your month goes, look at AI for Tally that covers bills, bank, entries, and questions together. KolossusAI is ₹10,000 a year for web and mobile, with a 14-day free trial on your own Tally. See how it fits Tally Prime users.
